What determines the price of a diamond
- Weight (carat) – 1 carat is 0.2 grams. The price per carat rises with weight, especially at round marks such as 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 carat.
- Colour – GIA grades from D (colourless) to Z. Higher colour grades usually cost more.
- Clarity – from FL (flawless) to I3. From VS2 upwards inclusions are usually not visible to the naked eye.
- Cut – determines how much light the stone returns. GIA grades cut only for round brilliants.
- Shape – at the same weight and grades, prices differ by shape, see the table above.
Grading follows the system of the Gemological Institute of America; GIA offers an introduction at 4cs.gia.edu. Explained in detail in our guide to the 4Cs.
How these figures are made
The basis is all 15,167 natural diamonds with a GIA report in our offer as of 06/11/2026. We evaluate the shop prices in US dollars, excluding shipping and import duties. Fancy colour diamonds are not included. The median is the middle value: half of the stones cost less, half more. Figures appear only when at least three stones back them. The page updates with every refresh of our offer.
The figures describe our offer at this point in time. They are not a market index and make no statement about future prices. We confirm the availability, price and delivery time of a specific stone in writing before the contract is concluded.
